Yoon approves appointment of 7 new KBS board members

President Yoon Suk Yeol has approved the appointment of seven new board members of public broadcaster KBS in line with the recommendations of the state broadcasting watchdog, an official said Thursday.

Yoon signed off on the appointments late Wednesday, hours after the recommendations were finalized during a standing committee meeting of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), the presidential official told Yonhap News Agency. All seven were recommended by the ruling People Power Party.

The KCC meeting was convened only hours after its new chief, Lee Jin-sook, took office following her appointment that came despite objections from the main opposition Democratic Party (DP).

The meeting was also used to appoint six new board members to the Foundation for Broadcast Culture, an oversight body and major shareholder of public broadcaster MBC.

The DP protested by threatening to introduce an impeachment motion against Lee.
