Senate President Reiterates Cambodia’s Commitment for Peace in Myanmar

President of the Senate of Cambodia, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, repeatedly underlined Cambodia’s commitment for peace in Myanmar.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen reminded this commitment when he received visiting H.E. U Ko Ko Hlaing, Union Minister for the Ministry of the State Administration Council Chairman’s Office of Myanmar at the Senate Palace here this morning.

In the meeting, the senate president shared Cambodia’s experience in resolution of past political crises, and negotiations toward complete peace for the Kingdom since 1998.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen stressed that finding a solution to end the war required the participation of all parties. ‘In fact, we could not abandon any stakeholders, even though we did not want to negotiate with them, as in the case of the Khmer Rouge in the 1980s and 1990s,’ he said.

The former Prime Minister of Cambodia also called on the Myanmar government to consider all military, political and diplomatic activities to seek peace without abandoning any parties.

At
the ASEAN platform, Samdech Techo Hun Sen asked Myanmar to carefully consider sending its non-political representatives to ASEAN meetings to avoid vacant seats. Myanmar must maintain her participation in other forums of which Myanmar is member and work closely with the countries that Myanmar has relations with.

Samdech Techo thanked Myanmar for its trust in Cambodia and emphasised that Cambodia’s sharing of experience with Myanmar is aimed to help and support Myanmar in finding a solution to the current crisis.

Cambodia has no strategic, political or economic gain in this effort. Cambodia’s only intention is not to see the people of Myanmar suffer from a tragedy due to prolonged war because Cambodia has already gone through it, he added.

For his part, H.E. U Ko Ko Hlaing thanked Cambodia for her support to Myanmar and spoke highly of Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s visit to Myanmar in early 2022 and other talks via videoconference with Myanmar’s leader. He also briefed the senate president on the current situation
in Myanmar.

H.E. U Ko Ko Hlaing said Myanmar will organise a free and fair election in the future, and hoped after the election, the situation in Myanmar will be improved and the cooperation between Cambodia and Myanmar will be further fostered.
