Ministry Kicked-Off Journalism Professional Charter

The Minister of Information has officially launched the Journalism Professional Charter, calling on compliance with the charter as well as licensed practice.

H.E. Neth Pheaktra kick-started the newly promulgated journalism charter in a dissemination workshop on August 6, following its broad consultation with media experts practitioners, and other relevant players.

The launch of the charter is a timely response to the rapid technology development that has transformed not only the traditional media but also how news is consumed.

Social media platforms like Facebook and Tik Tok, he said, have become a primary news source.

Without professional restrictions for content creators and sufficient fact-checked content, those new media platforms have given room for misinformation and fake news, leading to a decline in public trust in the media.

The information minister expected that the journalism charter would contribute to addressing the issues.

He also highlighted that of the roughly 2,000 media outlets regist
ered with the Ministry of Information, about half are online news and television.

H.E. Neth Pheaktra warned the online news channels operating without license and those violating licensed practice, encouraging them to ensure ethical and legal ground for their operation.
