Sarawak Shuttlers Eye Revenge After Setting Up Mixed Team Semis Against Selangor

SIBU, Sarawak will be looking for revenge when they take on Selangor in the semi-finals of the mixed team badminton competition in the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) at the Sibu Indoor Stadium today.

Sarawak, who downed Perak 3-1 in the quarter-finals this morning, were trounced 5-0 by Selangor in the group stage.

In the quarter-finals, SUKMA hosts Sarawak got off to a great start when Wong Ling Ching delivered the first point for them by defeating Perak’s Nur Aina Maisarah Muhamad Hatta 21-10, 21-9.

Although national men’s singles backup shuttler Eogene Eon Ewe restored parity by defeating Sarawak’s Goh Shun Huat 21-16, 21-18, the hosts restored their lead when Jeremy Zhen Liang-Kashley Tze Yin outplayed Ng Jhi Hao-Vannee Gobi Yap 21-17, 21-18 in mixed doubles.

It was then left to women’s doubles pair Genevie Tsin Yee-Lee Zi Suen to seal the winning point for the Land of the Hornbills when they overcame Cheng Pei En-Chong Jie Yu 21-18, 21-18.

Jeremy Zhen, however, knows they can expect a much stiffer test
against Selangor in the last four.

‘I hope we can all raise our game in the semi-final against Selangor. Although we lost to them (in the group stage), we will not go into the semis with a defeatist attitude but, instead, fight with all our might,’ he vowed.

Selangor, meanwhile, marched into the semi-finals with an easy 3-0 win over Negeri Sembilan in the last eight.

The other semi-final pits Penang against Federal Territories (FT).

In today’s quarter-finals, Penang trounced Melaka 3-0 while FT edged Johor 3-2.

The semi-finals will be held at the same venue later today.
