KTX train service returns to normal after derailment accident

KTX high-speed train service returned to normal on Monday, the operator said, one day after a train derailment caused severe delays throughout the Seoul-Busan route.

Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL) said the recovery work related to the derailment accident was completed at 5:08 a.m., paving the way for the resumption of normal operations nationwide.

The accident occurred at 4:38 p.m. Sunday, when a KTX Sancheon train from Seoul to Busan stopped near Daegu’s Gomo Station, 233 kilometers southeast of the capital, after one of its wheels jumped off the track. No injuries were reported but the accident caused hours of delays for other KTX trains amid a sweltering heat wave.

KORAIL said a total of 153 high-speed trains were delayed by up to 277 minutes due to the accident and it will compensate the affected customers for taxi fares and other expenses.
