(LEAD) Lions slugger Diaz exits game after getting hit by pitch

The new Samsung Lions slugger Lewin Diaz left Tuesday’s game after getting hit by a pitch on his left wrist.

Diaz was struck by a 0-1 fastball from Kiwoom Heroes starter Enmanuel De Jesus during the top of the fourth inning of the teams’ Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) regular-season game at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul.

The Dominican first baseman went down in obvious pain and was tended to by a trainer. After a few seconds, the trainer made the “X” sign with his arms toward the dugout, indicating Diaz could no longer play.

Diaz was lifted for pinch runner Yoon Jeong-bin, who stayed in the game and delivered the game-winning RBI with a single in the top of the sixth inning for a 1-0 victory.

The Lions said Diaz suffered a bruise on his left wrist and tests done at a nearby hospital showed no structural damage. The team added that Diaz was pain-free but he would be checked again after practice Wednesday.

A former Miami Marlin, Diaz came over from the Mexican league to make his Lions debut on Aug. 17, rep
lacing Ruben Cardenas. Diaz homered in his first game and put up a .333/.379/.704 line in seven games prior to Tuesday, along with three home runs and seven RBIs.
