Acting Head of State Receives Newly Appointed Australian Ambassador

Cambodian Acting Head of State, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, received here this morning credentials from newly appointed Ambassador of Australia to Cambodia H.E. Derek Yip.

On behalf of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, Samdech Techo Hun Sen extended warm welcome and congratulations to H.E. Derek Yip on his appointment as new Australian Ambassador to Cambodia.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen briefed the diplomat on the background of the Cambodia-Australia relationship and thanked Australia for its support to Cambodia in different areas, including human resources development, mine clearance, agriculture, etc.

The Acting Head of State asked H.E. Ambassador to help attract more investors to Cambodia and mentioned about the smooth investment of an Australia company in gold refinery in Mondulkiri province.

For his part, H.E. Derek Yip said Australia always regards the diplomatic relations with Cambodia as one of her priority missions as the two countri
es have a long history of cooperation.

H.E. Ambassador added that the current Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia H.E. Ms. Penny Wong always gives priority to the Australia-Cambodia bilateral relations because Australia considers Cambodia as an important and influential country in ASEAN. Australia is the first dialogue partner of ASEAN and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the ASEAN-Australia Dialogue Partnership, he said.

On education cooperation, H.E. Derek Yip underlined that to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Australia Awards in Cambodia this year, Australia had announced to increase the number of scholarships for Cambodian students from 45 to 62, starting in February 2025.

Besides, the new diplomat recalled the military cooperation between Cambodia and Australia, adding that a delegation of the Royal Australian Navy will pay a visit to Cambodia’s Preah Sihanouk province next week.

The meeting also touched on the bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, security, immigration, gov
ernance, fight against drug and human trafficking, and so on.
