Prosecutors on Friday raided the home of former President Moon Jae-in’s daughter as part of their investigation into allegations that her former husband was unfairly appointed as an airline executive in exchange for favors to the firm’s founder.

The Jeonju District Prosecutors Office sent a team of investigators to the residence of Moon Da-hye in Seoul to determine the extent of the financial support that Moon and his wife may have provided to their daughter’s family during his presidential term.

Moon’s former son-in-law, identified by his surname Seo, was employed as an executive director at the Thailand-based budget airline Thai Eastar Jet following the appointment of Lee Sang-jik as head of the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency in 2018.

Lee, a former two-term lawmaker with the then ruling Democratic Party and the founder of Eastar Jet Co., a South Korean budget carrier, also played a key role in establishing the Thai low-cost airline.

Seo’s employment, with his previous career including a stint at a game
company and no experience in the airline industry, raised skepticism about the background of his appointment at that time.

The broader investigation is focused on determining whether Lee’s appointment as head of the startups agency was, in fact, made in exchange for hiring Seo at his airline company.

Seo, who divorced the younger Moon in recent years, has been questioned three times this year as a witness, during which he exercised his right to remain silent.
