APSARA National Authority Restoring O Pha-ong Temple at Phnom Kulen

The restoration team of the APSARA National Authority is currently working on O Pha-ong Temple at Phnom Kulen in Siem Reap province, addressing significant damage to the structure.

The brick temple has developed larger cracks, leading to the collapse of several bricks and parts of the walls, which threatens its original form, said the authority in a news release.

According to Mr. Puth Soth, an official overseeing the restoration, the team plans to undertake comprehensive repairs. This includes reinforcing the lower section of the front gate, stabilising the brick walls around the door frame, and strengthening the corners of the roof on the third wall. They will also address existing cracks, manage water levels, and remove small trees that have taken root in the temple walls.

Mr. Soth noted that the temple has suffered extensive damage due to rain and vegetation, which has compromised its foundation and led to numerous cracks. Additionally, moisture has caused deterioration of the roof.

Previously, the ne
ws release pointed out, in 2010, the APSARA National Authority had conducted repairs on O Pha-ong Temple, focusing on reinforcing the exterior corners of the walls and restoring the first and second platforms.

O Pha-ong Temple is part of a group of historical sites in Phnom Kulen, which also includes Damrey Krab, Rong Chen, Neak Ta, and Khting Slab, said the same source, adding that it was constructed during the reign of King Jayavarman II in the 8th century AD.
