Chow To Continue Focusing On State Gov’t Agenda Following Recent Decision Not To Defend Party Post

GEORGE TOWN, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has vowed to focus on the state government’s development agenda and implement planned programmes and projects even after being labelled as a ‘lame-duck’ following his decision not to defend his position as Penang DAP chairman.

He said that certain statements had tried to paint him as being a ‘lame-duck’ chief minister if he did not defend his state chairmanship, and clarified that the ‘lame-duck’ concept was from the United States political system where two majority parties were vying for political power in Congress and other areas.

‘Yet in the context of Penang, the government is the executive wing that will continue with the implementation and there is rarely any need to obtain legislature support,’ he told reporters after attending the launch of the Advanced Technology Equipment Cluster (ATEC) here today.

Chow said he would continue carrying out his duties as Chief Minister even without the state chairmanship, as there were many state government projects
in the approval and initial stages, and also federal projects in the state.

Chow, the fifth Penang Chief Minister, recently confirmed that he would not defend the Penang state chairman’s post at the party’s convention in Spice Arena, Bayan Lepas this Sept 22.
