MOSTI Encourages Greater Private, State Involvement In Aerospace Sector

BATU PAHAT, The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) welcomes increased participation from both the private sector and state governments in the aerospace industry.

Its secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim said this aligns with the ministry’s focus for the year, which is set to significantly advance the aerospace sector.

‘Our key priority for 2024 is the development of the space sector and space technology. Several states have shown interest in establishing launch sites and forming diplomatic ties to explore this sector. Additionally, many companies are eager to launch their own satellites.

‘We are especially grateful for Sarawak’s involvement, as it reflects a growing interest and dynamism in this field,’ he told reporters after the closing of Malaysia Techlympics 2024 for the Southern Zone at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (UTHM) here today.

Aminuddin noted that Malaysia currently has over 70 private companies engaged in the aerospace sector.

Aminuddin was responding to Sarawak Pre
mier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s recent announcement regarding the establishment of a space training centre in the state.

Also present at the event were UTHM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr. Ruzairi Abdul Rahim, MOSTI deputy secretary-general Ruziah Shafei and Malaysia Innovation Foundation chief executive officer Dr Sharmila Mohamed Salleh.

In July, Premier Abang Johari revealed plans to develop a space training centre in Tanjung Bako, Kuching, with theoretical classes held at the Sarawak Technology Excellence Centre (CENTEXS) in Lundu. This initiative aims to position Sarawak for serious involvement in the aviation industry.

Aminuddin added that MOSTI has launched the Malaysia Space Industry Consortium (MASIC) to further advance the country’s aerospace capabilities.

‘The consortium will focus on several key areas, including the establishment of academies, launch sites and the facilitation of rocket launches,’ he said.
