Group 77 and China Marks 60th Anniversary in Geneva

H.E. SUON Prasith, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the WTO and other international organisations in Geneva, Switzerland delivered an opening remark at the opening ceremony of the 60th Anniversary of the Group 77 and China under the theme ‘The Six Decades of Unity and Future Progress’ at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland on Sept. 13

Cambodia as the President of Group 77 and China led the organisation of this important commemoration this year with the aims of celebrating the 60-year achievement of the group since its establishment, to jointly identify the priorities of the Group for the coming years as the world are currently facing unprecedented global challenges which is crucial for the group to determines a clear and coherent agenda for the upcoming 16th Ministerial Conference.

This important event was attended by many distinguished leaders including H.E. Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD, Ms. Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Exe
cutive Director of the International Trade Centre, Ambassador and Permanent Representatives of all members, and representatives of many international organisations.

This event has two important agenda items: 1. Panel discussion under the title ‘The Four Transformations for the Future: Building on the Bridgetown Covenant’ and ‘Looking ahead: G77 and China’s Priorities on the Road to Sustainable Development’ and 2. Adoption of the Joint Ambassadorial Statement of the Group of 77 and China.

In the opening remark, H.E. Ambassador provided a summary of the history, background, progress, and achievement of the establishment of Group 77 and China since 1964 and emphasised the importance of its principles of equity, mutual respect, collective action, and unity abided by all members in the past six decades.
