A Seoul court on Friday handed out prison terms ranging from 16 months to five years for five gang members for storming into a hotel and going on a rampage in Seoul.

The members of the gang, dubbed Sunoapa, were indicted for threatening hotel employees while demanding to meet with the president of KH Group at Grand Hyatt in Seoul’s Yongsan district during their three-night stay in 2020.

One of them, surnamed Yoon, 52, reportedly led the mob into the hotel after losing money from investing in a private equity owned by the chair of KH Group, Bae Sang-yu.

“Not only did the defendants obstruct the work of hotel staff and interrupt the peaceful routine of the guests, but they also made ordinary people question the security of our society,” the Seoul Central District Court said.

The court handed out suspended sentences for five other members.

Sunoapa, a gang established in the late 1980s in the southwestern city of Mokpo, expanded its influence by operating night clubs or running demolition services and was a
mong the top 10 gangs in the country in the 2000s. It currently has 120 members.
