Australia Announces Continued Support to Cambodia’s Agricultural Sector

AKP Phnom Penh, September 13, 2024 — Australia has reaffirmed her commitment to continue supporting Cambodia’s agricultural sector to achieve rice export goals, according to a joint press release.

Speaking at the recent 7th Cambodia Rice Forum in Phnom Penh, Australian Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Derek Yip said that Australia has been working with Cambodia to support the

growth of the agricultural sector since the 1960s. ‘We are very pleased to see significant progress in Cambodia’s rice sector with rice and paddy exports worth about US$1.8 billion in 2023,’ he underlined.

‘Australia is excited to continue our support, including through the Cambodia Australia Partnership for

Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED), to help Cambodian rice exporters find a global market for their luxury products and to promote sustainable agricultural production and processing,’ he added.

Themed ‘Transforming the Cambodia Rice Supply Chain to be Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable,’ the 7th Cambodia Rice Forum was organ
ised by the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) at the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra on Sept. 10, with Australia the primary sponsor through the CAPRED programme. Other sponsors included Khmer Enterprise, Agriculture and Rural Development Bank and USAID-Feed the Future Cambodia Harvest III.

Cambodia won the prestigious World’s Best Rice Award for Phka Rumduol five times – in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2018 and 2022 – and the Golden Award for fragrant rice variety from China in 2023.
