Police have warned candidates and their supporters in the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections to stop all campaign activities by midnight tonight.
Johor police chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said action would be taken under Section 24B of the Elections Act against anyone who campaigned past the deadline.
“Special teams are monitoring the final night of campaigning which will end at 11.59 pm. I warn people not to breach the regulations if they do not want to face action,” he said.
He was speaking at a media conference after addressing police officers and men on duty on the final campaign night at the Marine Police Training Centre here tonight. Also present was Johor deputy police chief DCP M. Kumar.
Kamarul Zaman said 520 applications for campaign permits were received throughout the campaign period, which began on Aug 26.
Of this number, 16 applications were rejected for various reasons, including the proposed campaign venues being located outside the by-election areas and at prohibited places like mosques.
He said four boys aged 14 to 19 and a 62-year-old man were arrested during the campaign period for committing mischief under Section 427 of the Penal Code, including vandalising party flags, but they were all released on police bail.
The Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats fell vacant following the death of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub on July 23.
Polling for both by-elections is tomorrow.
