Cambodia shipped 2,575 tonnes of milled rice to the Philippines in May, the first ever large-scale export to this regional partner.
The official launching ceremony of the Cambodian rice export to the Philippines was held in Phnom Penh on May 26 under the presidency of H.E. Pan Sorasak, Cambodian Minister of Commerce and H.E. Ms. Maria Amelita C. Aquino, Ambassador of the Philippines to Cambodia.
Speaking at the function, The Philippine ambassador praised the growth of rice trade between Cambodia and the Philippines, especially the export of Cambodian rice to the Philippine market which is a long-standing goal of Cambodia.
The first large-scale export was conducted by Khmer Food Group Co., Ltd. with Philippine importers, which showed the potential and readiness of Cambodian rice to other importers, she added.
For his part, H.E. Pan Sorasak laid stress on the Royal Government’s attention to making the Cambodian rice sector more competitive and on the Ministry of Commerce’s efforts to seek new markets for the Cambodian rice and rice processing products.
According to the Cambodia Rice Federation, in the first five months of 2023, Cambodia exported a total of 278,184 tonnes of milled rice worth more than US$191 million to 49 destinations, one of which is a new market, i.e. the Philippines.
Cambodia’s rice branded as “Angkor Jasmine” has won the World’s Best Rice for four times in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2018, while “Phkar Romduol” got the title in 2022.
