Brussels: On World Refugee Day, the European Commission and the High Representative have highlighted the strength and resilience of over 117 million displaced individuals globally. Displaced due to conflict, persecution, violence, and human rights violations, these individuals continue to rebuild their lives and contribute to host communities. According to European Union, as the world's leading humanitarian donor, the EU and its Member States are dedicated to supporting refugees, asylum seekers, and host communities. This support includes upholding international protection standards and ensuring access to essential services. The EU collaborates with international partners, such as the United Nations, to address the root causes of displacement and enhance stability in crisis-affected regions. A notable outcome of this approach was observed in 2025 when the number of displaced people globally decreased for the first time in a decade. The EU has also taken significant steps in hosting refugees, including offer ing temporary protection to over 4.8 million individuals fleeing Russia's war against Ukraine. Beyond Europe, the EU is actively involved in humanitarian responses in regions such as Sudan, Gaza, Lebanon, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Cuba, Haiti, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, providing crucial aid like food, water, shelter, education, and healthcare. Simultaneously, the EU is investing in long-term solutions for self-reliance among refugees and host communities through education, livelihoods, social protection, and inclusion. The recently adopted Joint Communication on Humanitarian Action emphasizes this approach, promoting an Integrated Approach to Fragility and public-private partnerships for investments in fragile settings. This strategy aims to address the root causes of fragility and displacement by strengthening resilience, promoting stability, and supporting sustainable development, while also addressing immediate humanitarian needs. Global cooperation remains vital, and the EU's humanita rian and development partners are essential in safeguarding the rights and dignity of refugees and asylum seekers worldwide. The EU continues to be a steadfast partner of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. With the first European Asylum and Migration Management Strategy, the EU has laid out a vision for a comprehensive approach to migration and asylum that is both fair and firm.
