Organizers of the upcoming Winter Youth Olympics in South Korea announced Thursday they will operate festival sites for interactive sports and cultural activities during the athletic competition.
The fourth Winter Youth Games will begin Friday with the opening ceremony to be simultaneously held in Gangneung, some 160 kilometers east of Seoul, and Pyeongchang, just west of Gangneung.
During the Jan. 19-Feb. 1 competition, Gangwon officials will set up the “Play Winter Zone” in four towns hosting the competition — Gangneung, Pyeongchang, Jeongseon and Hoengseong — and at the PyeongChang Olympic Museum.
Interactive programs built around winter sports, including skating, biathlon and ski jumping, will be offered, along with dance and choral performances.
Former Olympic athletes and honorary ambassadors for Gangwon 2024 will give clinics at the Play Winter Zone too.
At an outdoor ice rink in Gangneung, young skaters between 14 and 18 years of age can sign up for one-point lessons from Choi Min-jeong, a thre
e-time Olympic short track champion and Gangwon 2024 goodwill ambassador, on Saturday. Lee June-seo, the 2022 Olympic short track silver medalist, will hold his own clinic Sunday.
Then on Jan. 27 and 28, former national team figure skater Park So-youn will host young athletes for her one-point lessons.
Also on Jan. 28, a trio of Olympic gold medalists will hold an “Olympian Talk Show” in Pyeongchang. Kim Yu-na, the 2010 women’s figure skating gold medalist; Yun Sung-bin, the 2018 men’s skeleton champion; and Ryu Seung-min, the 2004 men’s table tennis gold medal winner, will share their own Olympic experience with an audience of adolescents between 14 and 18.
