Phnom penh: H.E. Stefan Messerer, Ambassador of Germany to Cambodia, has welcomed the convening of the General Border Committee (GBC) and reiterated Germany's strong commitment to back dialogue-based peace.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, as Cambodia and Thailand convene today, August 4th, for the General Border Committee (GBC), Ambassador Stefan Messerer's recent visit to the border region in Oddar Meanchey and Siem Reap on Friday, August 1st, together with Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Prak Sokhonn and members of the diplomatic community, serves as a timely reminder that at the heart of every conflict are real lives, and real people, read a statement from the German Embassy in Cambodia, posted this morning on its official page.
In the wake of the recent ceasefire, the embassy noted that the visit shone a light on the plight of internally displaced people, communities forced to leave their homes, caught between uncertainty and hope.
H.E. Stefan Messerer reaffirmed Germany's commitment to supporting peace through dialogue, emphasising that those most affected, particularly displaced individuals and families, must not be forgotten in the diplomatic process. Their safety, dignity, and right to return home in peace must remain central to all efforts toward de-escalation and reconciliation.
Germany welcomes the convening of the GBC as a vital step toward rebuilding trust and stability. Sustainable peace requires more than negotiated agreements, said the embassy, stressing that it requires listening to those whose voices are often furthest from the negotiation table, yet closest to its consequences.
Cambodia and Thailand agreed to hold the extraordinary GBC meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from Aug. 4 to 7, with representatives from Malaysia, the United States of America, and the People's Republic of China attending as observers.
