Tokyo: H.E. Nukaga Fukushiro, Speaker of Japan’s House of Representatives, has emphasized Cambodia’s status as a crucial partner for Japan within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The recognition was made during a courtesy and farewell visit by H.E. Tuy Ry, Cambodia’s Ambassador to Japan, along with embassy officials at the Speaker’s residence.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the meeting involved Ambassador Tuy Ry congratulating the Japanese government on several significant accomplishments, including the successful organization of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. He also acknowledged the 60th anniversary of Japan’s overseas volunteer program, which signifies Japan’s commitment to international solidarity and sustainable development. The ambassador highlighted the recent elevation of Cambodia-Japan relations to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” in 2023, marking a peak in bilateral ties.
The ambassador praised the longstanding friendship and fruitful cooperation in various sectors. He noted the active exchange of high-level visits and ongoing communications, such as the official visit of Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, to Japan in late May 2025, where constructive discussions with the Japanese Speaker took place on May 30.
The Cambodian Royal Government’s dedication to maintaining a strong partnership was reiterated, emphasizing the mutual benefits for both nations and their citizens. The ambassador expressed deep gratitude to Japan for its continuous support in Cambodia’s peace process, development cooperation, and humanitarian aid, including a notable contribution of US$1.8 million in emergency assistance for Cambodian refugees along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
Ambassador Tuy Ry highlighted Cambodia’s focus on peaceful relations, cooperation, and development with neighboring countries, stressing the importance of implementing effective ceasefire agreements. He called on the international community, including Japan, to persist in backing Cambodia’s endeavors to sustain peace, boost regional stability, and uphold international cooperation principles.
Speaker Nukaga, in response, reaffirmed his perspective of Cambodia as one of Japan’s most valued ASEAN partners. He praised the advancements in bilateral relations and collaboration following the 2023 elevation to a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,’ concurrent with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The Speaker also acknowledged Ambassador Tuy Ry’s commitment to strengthening the friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and Japan during his tenure.
