LKTN TO EXPAND INVOLVEMENT OF ORANG ASLI IN KENAF PLANTING

The National Kenaf and Tobacco Board (LKTN), with the cooperation of the Orang Asli Development Department (JAKOA), will get the Orang Asli community in Gua Musang to be involved in the planting of kenaf soon.

Its chairman, Datuk Wan Abd Rahim Wan Abdullah said this is to raise the socio-economics of the Orang Asli community and it is expected to start after the August state elections.

“The proposal to get the community involved is still in the process of evaluation and research with local leaders, including the Tok Batin (headmen).

“I will go to the Orang Asli areas in Gua Musang in September to look into related matters before the planting of kenaf begins," he told reporters after the LKTN Kenaf Talk Programme at Jalan Kebun Sultan, here today.

Elaborating, Wan Abd Rahim said the research will cover all aspects, including issues of land suitability for crops and topography factors in the settlement areas.

He said the land condition must also be considered to ensure machinery can be taken in and used in the kenaf planting areas.

"There will be discussions towards this effort as the views of the community must also be considered. Kenaf planting does not require complicated care.
