NCER ORGANISES MALAYSIA SDG SUMMIT 2023: NORTHERN REGION

BATU KAWAN, The Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), together with the Ministry of Economy, will be organising the Malaysia Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit 2023: Northern Region on Nov 16 at Dewan Canselor, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Seri Iskandar, Perak.

Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) chairman Mohamad Haris Kader Sultan said that the summit was to support the Federal Government’s efforts in boosting SDG implementation and achievements at state and local levels, and aimed to raise awareness and general understanding of the goals among Malaysians.

"NCER organised the summit as we want to expose SDG (initiatives that have been implemented), sustainable development and its challenges to the public, encourage capacity development and promote best practices, especially to industries, businesses and graduates,” he said during an exclusive interview with Bernama here today.

He also shared that the Ministry of Economy, acting as the focal point in empowering SDG programmes, would monitor their progress at the national level and would be able to implement initiatives systematically to provide positive impact to the NCER.

In line with the theme of the Malaysia SDG Summit 2023-2024, implementation at the regional level was emphasised to allow more parties to participate in a platform of public dialogue at the local level, he said, adding that it was vital that local-level SDG-related plans, programmes and projects were aligned with the targets contained in the Sustainable Agenda 2030.

He also shared that there would be several matters brought up during the summit, including sharing sessions by ‘local champions’ about the impact of the implementation of their local SDG initiatives, programmes and projects as well as the benefits gained.

The summit will take place from 9 am to 5.30 pm and will be opened to the public, he said, adding that they were aiming to gather around 300 to 500 participants, especially those living in the northern region states of Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak.

“Those interested in attending the summit need only register at the following link: https://bit.ly/ncersdgsummit,” he said, adding that the response so far has been ecounraging.

Mohamad Haris also shared that the NCIA was in the process of drafting and improving the NCER Strategic Development Plan by making SDGs the main element in every ongoing and future implementation plan.

The NCIA hoped to be a catayst in encouraging continuous SDG implementation at the local level with the involvement of relevant stakeholders, he added.
