President Yoon Suk Yeol will send a ruling party lawmaker as his special envoy to the inauguration ceremony of Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arevalo, his office said Wednesday.
Rep. Kim Jung-jae of the People Power Party, who heads a South Korea-Guatemala lawmakers’ association, will attend the ceremony on Sunday and deliver to the incoming president Yoon’s letter conveying his congratulations and wish to further strengthen their countries’ friendly and cooperative relations, the office said in a press release.
The lawmaker also plans to meet with senior officials of the incoming administration and leaders of the Korean community in Guatemala, and visit companies run by Koreans there.
Guatemala is home to around 6,000 Koreans and around 160 South Korean-run businesses, according to the presidential office. The country has long been a friendly nation to South Korea among Central American nations, with the two countries developing relations in various areas, including the economy, development cooperat
ion and culture, since establishing diplomatic ties in 1962.
